Seedcane plots continue to produce top yields

SA Canegrowers’ field staff with representatives from the South African Sugar Research Institute assess yield estimates at a seedcane plot in Darnall on the KwaZulu-Natal North coast.

Scores of 1ha plots are now established thanks to funding from SA Canegrowers and Coca Cola’s Mintirho Foundation across the sugarcane producing regions of the country.

The aim of the plots is to provide clean and approved seedcane to the thousands of small scale growers in rural areas who depend on sugarcane for their livelihoods. This is in line with the industry’s Vision 2023.

Vision 2023 is a strategic development plan to bolster yields and the quality of sugarcane grown by small-scale growers. The goal is to secure an improved income for the growers and to provide improved quality cane delivered to the mills.
