SA Canegrowers Felixton the first in Umthombo Financial Services rollout
In a move to further support the interests of small-scale rural growers SA Canegrowers is now offering the industry's Umthombo Financial Services at their Felixton regional offices.
Umthombo Financial Services is a retention savings account scheme offered by the South African Sugar Association. Money earned from the crop is retained on behalf of the growers by the sugar association which can then be drawn when required to cover field preparation or machinery costs. All the transactions are manually recorded.
SA Canegrowers has signed a sub-contracting agreement with Tongaat Hulett - who previously offered the service - with its Felixton regional office being the first to roll out the service to the growers.
SA Canegrowers' Area Manager in Felixton, Katherine Keal said the development was not only exciting but once best practice was established the service would then be offered in Amatikulu before being rolled out in all the regions. "Growers can easily access their funds now by coming to the Felixton offices on a Wednesday and Thursday. We are striving to provide an efficient service by following up on all transactions to make sure they are finalised timeously for the growers," Keal said.
