In what is believed to be a first for South African agriculture, SA Canegrowers has designed a unique funeral benefits scheme for farm workers employed by the association’s commercial members and for the industry’s small-scale growers. The scheme for large-scale grower employees has been in operation for 18 months and the scheme for small-scale growers was launched in October last year. Over 5 000 main members are now insured under the plan and approximately R1 million has already been paid out in claims to date.
